01What is a nol card?

The nol card is the payment card for public transport in Dubai. It is run by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). You tap it on a gate or a reader when you enter and leave. One card works across the Metro, the Dubai Tram, buses, the water bus and ferry, and it can also pay for some taxis and parking. Some other services accept it too.

For a new resident, the nol card is the cheapest and most reliable way to move around the city in your first weeks. In busy areas like Marina, Downtown and Deira, many people live happily without a car. Check our areas guide for places close to the Metro.

Important: card prices, fares and rules can change. We explain how the system works, and we tell you where to check the current numbers on the RTA website or app.

02Nol card types

There are several types. Which one you choose depends on how often you travel.

The RTA may add new options or change names. Always check the current list in the RTA app before you buy.

03Where to buy a nol card

Buy from official points only. Bring cash or a bank card as the machine requires. For a Blue card, bring your Emirates ID and follow the steps shown by the RTA.

04How to top up your nol card

  1. Vending machine. At any Metro station. Tap your card, choose the amount and pay with cash or card.
  2. The nol Pay app or RTA app. Register your card in the app and top up from your phone with a bank card. Some phones can also read the card by NFC.
  3. Retail outlets. Ask the cashier to top up the card.
  4. Auto top-up. You can link your bank card so the balance fills when it gets low, so you never get stuck at a gate.

Keep a small buffer on the card. The system needs a minimum balance to let you in, and it takes the final fare when you tap out.

05How to ride the Metro

Dubai Metro has two main lines, the Red Line and the Green Line, and it runs above ground on much of its route. Trains are driverless, air-conditioned and clean. Stations are easy to follow in English and Arabic.

  1. Enter the station and tap your nol card on the gate. Wait for the green light.
  2. Follow the signs to your line and direction.
  3. Stand behind the line on the platform, and let people exit first.
  4. Use the right cabin. There is a Women and Children cabin, a Gold class cabin, and the standard cabin.
  5. When you arrive, tap your card again at the exit gate. If you forget to tap out, the system may charge the maximum fare.

Metro hours and special timings (for example, during Ramadan or on holidays) change. Check the live times in the RTA app before you travel, especially late at night and on Fridays.

06Zones and fares

The fare depends on how many zones you cross. The city is split into zones, and the fare grows as you cross more of them. Short trips within one zone cost the least. Fares are charged the same way on the Metro, buses and tram, and the RTA has a journey planner in its app that shows the fare before you go.

There is also a daily cap on what you pay, which can protect you from high charges when you travel a lot in one day. The exact amounts and cap details are published by the RTA and can change, so check the current figures on the RTA site.

07Buses, tram, ferry and taxis

If you decide to buy a car later, our transport guide and Drive Dubai guide explain Salik, parking and buying or leasing.

08Rules and fines you should know

The official rules and the fines list are on the RTA website. They can change, so check there.
