01When you can renew

According to the official UAE government portal, you can renew your Emirates ID after it expires or up to six months before it expires. Renewal reminders are sent by SMS and in the ICP app, but it is worth putting the date in your calendar.

02How to renew your Emirates ID

You can renew through:

Cardholders aged 15 and over must complete fingerprint and signature procedures at an ICP service centre. The official page does not list the renewal fee or the documents, so check both on the ICP website before you go.

New to the system? Our Emirates ID and UAE Pass guide explains what the card is, how a first application works and which government apps to set up.

03Late renewal fine

If you renew more than one month after expiry, you pay AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000. Renewing on time avoids the fine, so do not wait until the card has expired.

04Lost, stolen or damaged card

  1. Submit a replacement request through the ICP service page.
  2. If the card is lost, report the loss to ICP within 7 days of the date you lost it.

The 24-hour urgent service is for UAE nationals and GCC nationals residing in the UAE. According to the official page, other expatriate residents qualify only for replacements, at an ICP customer happiness centre with the required documents.

Your Emirates ID is needed for banking, healthcare and tenancy contracts, so renew early. See our banking guide and housing guide for where it is asked for.
